In a recent Visual Communication class project, I reinterpreted and modernized Philip K. Dick's Ubik by designing two innovative book covers that probe its themes of duality, existential conflict, and surrealism.

Overview

This project reimagined the cover of Ubik with two designs: one highlighting symmetry to reflect the novel’s opposing forces, and another using an abstract, retro aesthetic to capture its era and themes of distorted reality. Both designs aim to represent the narrative’s complexity and appeal to modern audiences.

The Challenge

This project aimed to visually encapsulate the novel’s narrative, blending its retro-futuristic aesthetic with modern design. The goal was to create designs that resonate with both loyal fans and new readers, offering a fresh yet faithful perspective on the story.

The Solution

The first cover uses symmetry and a red-blue palette to symbolize conflict and harmony, while the second embraces 1960s-inspired geometric repetition and abstract retro styling. Both designs combine bold typography with visuals that resonate with the novel’s surreal and layered story.

The symmetrical cover resonates with fans drawn to the story's psychological and existential conflicts, while the abstract design offers a collector’s edition-style aesthetic. These covers demonstrated my ability to adapt multiple design styles to a single project, showcasing creativity and conceptual depth.
